Yellow-sticker and surplus radar

Cheap food near you: markdowns, pantries and farm shops

When the supermarket marks down, when the community pantry opens, which farm shop does a veg box, where the bakery sells yesterday's loaves at half price. Type your postcode.

Markdown windows

Most supermarkets reduce fresh food at set times. Neighbours report the window for their branch, so you see the current one.

Fridges, pantries and social supermarkets

A community fridge is free: walk in, take what you can use. A pantry or social supermarket is a weekly shop for a few pounds, open to everyone in the area. No referral needed at most of them.

Farm shops and veg boxes

Often cheaper than the supermarket for seasonal veg, and the money stays in the village.

Questions about the radar

When do supermarkets put yellow stickers on?

It varies by chain and by branch, which is exactly why neighbours report it. As a rule of thumb, first reductions on fresh food come mid-afternoon and the deepest cuts, often 75% or more, appear in the last hour or two before closing. Bakery and chilled aisles go first.

What is a community pantry and who can use it?

A membership shop, usually run by a charity or church, where a small weekly fee, typically £3 to £5, buys a basket of groceries worth several times that. Most are open to anyone living in the area, no referral needed. Some ask you to live in a particular postcode.

How is a social supermarket different from a food bank?

A food bank gives emergency parcels, usually by referral. A social supermarket sells surplus food at a heavy discount to members, so you choose what you take and there is no referral. Neither is a last resort; both exist to be used.

Are farm shops really cheaper?

For seasonal vegetables, eggs and some meat, often yes, and the money stays local. For branded groceries, usually no. They are listed here so you can compare, and the businesses listed are ranked by what neighbours said about them.

How do I add a place or fix a wrong opening time?

Join free and use the report button on any listing. Reports from several households confirm a window; a single report shows as unverified until then. Businesses cannot edit their own markdown times.
