What the warnings say

  • MOT, 30 days out. Book now; test up to a month early and keep the same date; rated garages near you.
  • MOT, 7 days and expired. What driving without one costs you, and the one journey you are still allowed.
  • Tax, 14 days. Two-minute link to tax it, the direct debit premium, and who pays nothing.
  • Insurance, 28 days. The cheap week: get quotes, ring your insurer with the best one, cancel auto-renewal. We are not a comparison site and nobody pays us.

Every date also lands on your money calendar.

Questions about car reminders

Where do the dates come from?

The MOT expiry and tax due date come from DVLA's Vehicle Enquiry Service, the same public record the GOV.UK vehicle checker shows, refreshed weekly. Cars under three years old get an estimated first MOT date from the month of first registration. The insurance renewal is the one date only you know, so you type it once.

When exactly do you warn me?

MOT: 30 days before, 7 days before, and on the day it runs out. Tax: 14 days before and on the day. Insurance: 28 days before, when quotes are cheapest, and again at 7 days so it cannot auto-renew unnoticed. Each warning goes once, by email, and the dates also appear on your renewal calendar and in the Sunday email.

Why four weeks for insurance?

Insurers price by how far ahead you buy. Quotes taken three to four weeks before renewal are consistently the cheapest and the price climbs in the last few days. Since 2022 your own insurer cannot charge you more than a new customer for the same policy, but a different insurer can still be far cheaper, and the renewal letter never says so.

Can I add more than one car?

Yes, as many as the household runs. Each has its own dates and its own warnings.
